Crime Records

The main function of this Division is to collect, compile and disseminate information on Crime, Criminal, Missing persons and Property in respect of various offences on the basis of monthly returns from State / UT Police authorities. 

Data stored is used for co-ordination of lost and recovered property viz. Motor vehicles, Firearms and Cultural Property.  These results are communicated through wireless or email to the various District SPs. Also the data bank is used to provide the NOC to the various Transport Authorities within Delhi. 

Talash  

The data pertaining to Talash is used to co-ordinate the persons Arrested, Wanted, Missing, Kidnapped, Escapees, Deserters, Unidentified persons and Unidentified dead bodies.  In case of co-ordination, concerned authorities are informed accordingly.

NCRB Gazette

A publication “NCRB Gazette” is published by this Branch every quarter and the same is disseminated to all Distt. SPs in India. The April – June, 2006 issue of NCRB Gazette has already been published and disseminated to all District SPs in the country. 

Counterfeit Currency

Data on counterfeit currency, in circulation (recovered/seized) in the country is collected from all the 19 branches of RBI and the State/UT police authorities. Based on this data, a monthly review is prepared and circulated to concerned agencies viz., the NSCS (National Security Council Secretariat), RBI, and CPOs(Central Police Organizations) etc. A quarterly review of counterfeit currency is also compiled and disseminated amongst all the District SPs and the Law Enforcement agencies in the country.   

Cultural Property

Data on Cultural property and general crimes that are available with this Branch are of very essential nature as instant information is sought on the above mentioned subjects during the Parliament sessions and even otherwise by other State Police authorities. 

Motor Vehicle Verification Counter

The NCRB has opened a Motor Vehicle Verification Counter / Window w.e.f. 05.01.2001 at its headquarters in New Delhi, provide the following information to the general public at a nominal fee of Rs.10/-. 

  • Recovery status of a stolen vehicle.

  • To enable the potential buyer of a second hand vehicle to know whether the  vehicle is not stolen one or involved in any crime. 

The results are provided instantaneously.  The above facility can also be availed by outstation applicants by remitting the prescribed fee of Rs.10/- by means of Indian Postal Order (only), drawn in favour of ‘Director, NCRB’ payable at ‘R.K. Puram, New Delhi’. The results are intimated by ordinary post.  

Similar counters for providing information on stolen/recovered motor vehicles are functioning at Ambala, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurgaon, Guwhati, Jammu, Kolkata, Mathura, Pondicherry, rewari and Shillong.   

Web based Recovered Vehicle Inquiry

Information on  Motor Vehicles recovered in the country during the last 3 years has been made available on NCRB website. The data base is updated regularly as per the data received from states and district headquarters. 

Portrait Building System

The NCRB has been assisting the Investigating Officers (IOs) of State/UT police, CBI and other agencies by preparing the portraits of the accused, based on the account given by the eyewitnesses, under the PBS (Portrait Building System). The portraits have been prepared even in some sensational cases which have yielded highly encouraging results. So far, the NCRB has prepared 3079 portraits. The facility is also available in all the State Crime Records Bureaux and District Crime Records Bureaux.
